Day 8: Painted Desert

April 18, 2005: I'd heard about how picturesque the Petrified Forest/Painted Desert was, but unfortunately, the park closed at 6pm. I decided I'd see it first thing in the morning, staying overnight in Holbrook.

Monday morning in Arizona.

I'm not a morning person, but it's easier to be one in Arizona when you're on an Eastern Daylight Savings Time schedule. (...In fact, I didn't even realize Arizona doesn't do Daylight Savings Time until I was having breakfast at Denny's and saw that it was only a quarter past five.)

The park opened at 7am, and I got there a little early, so I took pictures of the desert primroses near the parking lot.

They say that the best photo times are early morning and late afternoon. I was fortunate that there was no one else at the park that early, and it was quite silent except for some songbirds and the distant noise of the highway.
